The east side, as most Singaporeans would define it, has the most interesting spread of pie shops outside the city. Note that we include Katong, Joo Chiat and Geylang here; URA’s planning map puts parts of them in the Central Region, but nobody who lives there calls it central.
Katong and Joo Chiat: a pie crawl
Katong and Joo Chiat can fill a whole afternoon. Start with banana pie: Dona Manis on East Coast Road ($4.50, original or chocolate) and Auntie Peng at Katong Shopping Centre ($3.30). Then walk to Joo Chiat Place for The Egyptian Baker’s $9 beef goulash pie, and finish at Elijah Pies’ Joo Chiat cafe for a slice of something inventive.
Pasir Ris and Tampines
Pasir Ris has two very different chicken pies. Cottage Pies Cafe has made country-style pies since 1997, including curry chicken and black pepper steak; we could not confirm current prices, so check before you go. At White Sands, linked to Pasir Ris MRT, there is a Chicken Pie Kitchen kiosk selling DonChef’s Don pies (see directions to the White Sands kiosk), and Polar has a Pasir Ris outlet for a halal-certified option. In Tampines, Auntie Peng has a second banana pie counter at Century Square.
Shepherd’s pie and pub pie
The Shepherd’s Pie, based in the Bedok North and Simei area, has made shepherd’s pies since 2007 and states that it is halal-certified. For a sit-down steak and ale pie, Pig N Whistle on Changi Road is a British-style pub; its last published price was from 2022.
Geylang and Paya Lebar
The Gourmet Pie Company in Geylang has offered more than 30 savoury pies, including beef rendang, though most published details date from 2021. On Upper Paya Lebar Road, Big Bakery sells apple crumble pie at $2.80 a slice.
